Vaccines currently available for the control of PPR are live attenuated vaccines. They confer strong protection of the host against all strains of the disease following proper administration, with no side effect whatever the physiological status of the host (in particular no abortion).

PPR vaccines are produced by more than 20 manufacturers.The PPR vaccine strains more wildely used are PPRV Nigeria 75/1 (developed by CIRAD and Pirbright Institute) and, to a smaller extent, PPRV Sungri 96 (developped in India). At least for PPRV Nigeria 75/1, it has been shown that protective antibodies generated after a single injection persist for at least 3 years.

PPR vaccines are lyophilised in order to extend the the vaccine shelf-life by maintaining the viral titer above the requested vaccinal dose as long as possible at higher temperatures compatible with tropical conditions. Shelf life can reach 2051 days at 4°C, 19 days at 25°C. It is difficult to maintain the convenional vaccines in the long term at temperatures above 4°C, but new lyophilization and production techniques has led to the production of more thermotolerant vaccines produced by multiple vaccine producers under quality control .
